Ghent University adopts SubtitleNEXT to equip students for the future

For immediate release – 19 May 2022, Ghent, Belgium – Europe’s prestigious Belgian Ghent University has invested in the SubtitleNEXT platform for the Department of Translation, Interpreting and Communication to further empower students.

After carefully reviewing a number of subtitling software systems, including free cloud-based programmes, the university’s Language and Translation Technology team chose SubtitleNEXT as system of choice to replace their previous subtitling tool.

Ghent University is a major public research institution, currently ranked within the top one hundred World University Rankings. With a total of 36,000 students and 9,000 staff, the University of Ghent has over eleven faculties offering more than two hundred courses that conduct in-depth research within a wide range of scientific disciplines, while its research investment averages around £180 million annually.

Within the Department of Translation, Interpreting and Multilingual Communication, students are being trained as language and language technology specialists, which offers them career perspectives in the translation and interpreting industry, including marketing and communications, education, natural language processing (NLP), and so forth.

For many years, subtitling has been part of the curriculum at Bachelor, Master, and Postgraduate level, and constitutes an important internship program thanks to collaborations with The International Film Fest Gent.

Ghent University’s Language Technology Lecturer Cynthia Van Hee says, “SubtitleNEXT stood out from the other systems due to many factors such as its intuitive interface and the large number of functionalities it offers. The versatile licensing schemes, including PBT EU’s dedicated technical support and maintenance options also appealed to us, as they give us flexibility to request specific functionalities for our purposes.”

Expanding on the key elements that attracted the department to invest in SubtitleNEXT, Cynthia outlines further details, “With teaching purposes in mind, our decision was mainly based on the technical advantages that SubtitleNEXT offers, outlined in my summary as follows:

Firstly, SubtitleNEXT’s intuitive interface works for us. Basic functionalities for loading a video, such as, spotting, adding, removing, and editing subtitles are all straightforward in the system. This is a major requirement for us, given that teachers and students with different backgrounds would be working with SubtitleNEXT.

Secondly, we were very impressed with the multitude of functionalities SubtitleNEXT has to offer and that they are also relevant to a range of other courses in our department. SubtitleNEXT provides invaluable respeaking and live subtitling options for candidates in our Interpreting Master’s programme too, including automatic translation plugin possibilities for the courses on Translation, displaying different interface layouts that allow easy comparison of subtitle files and so on.

Thirdly, given our yearly collaborations with different film festivals, SubtitleNEXT also delivers in this important area for us, with the types of video formats the system supports and the number of export possibilities.

Finally, the SubtitleNEXT floating licensing option that PBT EU offers is a considerable advantage when working with many groups of students.”

In addition, Cynthia reveals a few of her favourite features in SubtitleNEXT, “We really like the logical and clear layout design with limitless options for subtitle layout and editing. The various interface layouts, such as the side-by-side view for correcting purposes are useful, as well as the support for different video and export formats. It’s also great that we have the opportunity in SubtitleNEXT to create different subtitling profiles, each with their own set of properties.”

Looking ahead to what’s next, she adds, “We are also eager to learn more about the live subtitling option in the future. We are truly satisfied with SubtitleNEXT as our new subtitling software, and so are our students. The software appears to be very intuitive to them and provides all necessary options to allow them to successfully embark on their subtitling adventure.

We are also really happy with and grateful for the customer support we received so far. Switching software always implies many changes and a steep learning curve, but we can always address our concerns and questions, which are responded quickly and efficiently.”

CEO and Managing Partner of PBT EU, Ivanka Vassileva concludes, “We are delighted to welcome Ghent University to the growing community of SubtitleNEXT professionals. We feel immensely proud that the university’s dynamic Language and Translation Technology team invested in SubtitleNEXT for its various language and translation programmes, arming a future generation with key skills within a fast-paced global market. As a team that places our customers as first priority, we deeply value the relationship we have with the university, and we very much look forward to working with Cynthia and her outstanding team as they continue to transfer excellent subtitling skills to the next generation in an evolving digital world.”

The SubtitleNEXT platform is used for both offline and real-time captioning for all kinds of media formats. Some of the many organisations, including universities that have already adopted SubtitleNEXT include EMG, Digitalmeister GmbH, Leinhäuser Language Services GmbH, Polsat, Kino Polska, University of Rome Tor Vergata, the University of Warsaw, European School of Translation, Max Live Media Access, Biovisjon, IT Pros Subtitles, Doli Media Studio, Cube Cinema Technologies, Tring TV, Bulgarian National Television, Canal Plus Myanmar, AMC, HD Media, Hellenic American College of Greece, European School of Translation, the Complutense University of Madrid, and many others.

SubtitleNEXT attracts attention at APTRAD and The Languages & the Media Conference

Studios take a keen interest in SubtitleNEXT’s Live Subtitling capabilities

For immediate release – 13 October 2021, Sofia, Bulgaria The SubtitleNEXT team is proud to celebrate a successful outcome after attendance as official Exhibitor Partner and premium sponsor of APTRAD and The Languages & the Media 2021 Virtual conferences last month. With media accessibility being more urgent than ever for broadcasters and AVT professionals, the timing of shows like APTRAD and Languages and The Media, have been of paramount importance.

The SubtitleNEXT team introduced the latest developments of both the SubtitleNEXT and NEXT-TT software platforms, which attracted the attention of researchers and experienced professionals in the audiovisual accessibility, transaction, and localisation world at the Languages and the Media (L&M) show in Berlin, which is Europe’s leading localisation event.

New features in SubtitleNEXT and NEXT-TT were showcased and include integration with newsroom editing systems such as AVID, iNews, and Octopus, real-time live subtitling with one or two stages respeaking capability, dictation corrections plus more, all compatible with You Tube, Zoom, Decklink, Newfor and others. The powerful NEXT-TT platform optimises collaborative work and QC, by incorporating many of the remarkable advancements available in SubtitleNEXT.

Highlights and key trends of the L&M show in Berlin covered topics such as machine translation, automatic speech to text and text to speech technologies and how these innovations affect how content owners, media studios, language service providers and freelance subtitlers achieve results as they work on key projects.

CEO of PBT EU Ivanka Vassileva reflected on what she encountered at L&M, “We discovered that there appear to be quite a few Language Service Providers that enter the media localisation market and try to use their computer assisted translation tools for audiovisual translation work. Consequently, this disrupts the traditional subtitling processes, and in turn pressurises the media studios to implement these technologies within their current workflows. Ultimately, this situation then leads to the need for workflow management solutions that are capable of incorporating automatic transcription and translation processing together with the use of other tools. This helps with text correction, but it means that the work of the subtitler in these organisations becomes increasingly more focused on only correcting computer-generated subtitles, instead of actually generating subtitles themselves from a template or from scratch. However, the good news is that all these are functions and capabilities that the media studios require are already available in NEXT -TT and SubtitleNEXT, and it was great that both of our solutions received acknowledgement and interest by them at the show, crediting the software as extremely useful and affordable for companies to invest in, irrespective of their size.”

Live subtitles for live events and meetings” was another hot topic aired at the L&M show. “Even though many countries already have vast experience in this area, it is still fairly new ground to tread for many new markets presenting challenges that have to be carefully considered such as selecting the best workflows and technologies that include specifics such as language and human resources. Therefore, there is a need for simple, easy to use and highly adaptive solutions for both large broadcasters and small live captioning freelance teams. SubtitleNEXT is clearly a market leader in the live subtitling field as the system offers various workflows and user-friendly tools. Another advantage that SubtitleNEXT offers companies that want live subtitling, is that it provides advanced offline subtitle preparation capabilities in a single application.” Ivanka noted.

As a premium sponsor of APTRAD, the SubtitleNEXT team had a busy turnout to their daily demonstrations of the latest innovations in its subtitling technology, including a new automatic Licensing Manager available in SubtitleNEXT version 5.10. The new License Manager provides organisations with an administrator account to allocate the acquired licenses for the users of choice, under self-management.

Overall, the team’s participation in the technology roundtable proved to be an informative and productive discussion between professionals from different backgrounds. Creator of the SubtitleNEXT software platform, Profuz Digital’s CTO Kamen Ferdinandov was a speaker at the technology roundtable sessions at APTRAD, with his contributions well-respected and highly valued by the subtitling community. He highlighted the important role that audiovisual translation tools play in today’s world and explored informative topics across the AV translation and broadcast sectors ranging from subtitling, dubbing, accessibility modalities, subtitling for hearing-impaired people, and audio description. Kamen said, “We were able to share at the roundtable at APTRAD our current achievements and discuss with other industry professionals about the best way to meet users’ needs, including what’s next in the pipeline.”

The SubtitleNEXT team also invited APTRAD attendees to enter a raffle for a chance to win a laptop and a sought-after SubtitleNEXT Lifetime Expert License. A well-known industry professional in Portugal, Mr Paulo Fernando, was the fortunate winner of the SubtitleNEXT raffle and was impressed with the software which he described as very powerful.

In response to audience requests at these recent events, the team at SubtitleNEXT will be holding a series of technology “SubtitleNEXT Friday Workshops” as of mid-October onwards, to demonstrate how to create subtitles from scratch or from source. The first session will take place on 15th October and will be completely free. Click this link to join in: https://join.skype.com/GJn8QL88GBhT

PBT EU launches Timed-Text hybrid platform NEXT-TT at IBC2018

Demonstrations feature European debut of NEXT-TT & EXEcutor™ Media Integrator

IBC Stand 9.LP35, IBC Show, The RAI, Amsterdam, 14 – 18 September 2018

IBC2018 sets the scene for the European premiere of new Timed-Text hybrid platform NEXT-TT powered by Profuz Digital from global systems integration specialists PlayBox Technology EU (PBT EU). PBT EU will also showcase the EXEcutor™ Media Integrator module, already adopted by major telecom operators. Demonstrations will take place at PBT EU’s dedicated Launch Pad 9.LP35 at the show, from 14 – 18 September in Amsterdam.

The complete NEXT-TT solution is comprised of two distinct elements that work together as a single, unified platform: LAPIS (Limitless Advanced Powerful and Intelligent System) with timed-text subtitling software application SubtitleNEXT. The fusion has resulted in new capabilities enabling extremely fast and efficient generation of managing timed-text, dubbing and localisation services of any type of content, or managing teams of translators, audiovisual professionals, and creative freelancers, providing an ultra-secure and super-fast private workspace, toolsets, and workflows for ensuring quality.

NEXT-TT has already attracted the attention of leading Hollywood studios and quickly gaining a reputation as a gamechanger in subtitling. This unique approach is designed to give users greater freedom of choice in how they work with desktop or cloud applications. SubtitleNEXT and LAPIS can also be used separately bringing the best of both worlds to subtitlers. (https://subtitlenext.com/product-line/platform/)

LAPIS is a central hub that brings disparate data services that media companies use under one roof. It manages complex processes, tasks, video, audio, text, user access, security, and safeguards confidential material. It has the ability to access and search data across many providers such as YouTube, Vimeo, stock image libraries, internal media asset storage systems and customer relationship data bases.

NEXT-TT is user-friendly, innovative, customisable, intuitive and affordable already adopted across various multimedia industries and is designed for both personal and professional use. It easily adapts to any settings, resolutions, and formats such as AR, MR, XR, VR, 8K, 4K, 2K, HD, SD, 3D, UHD across online video, TV, film, theatre, concerts, festivals, conferences and events. It can be applied throughout the entire video production process from concept to distribution.

PBT EU partnered with Italy’s IT Pros Subtitles® this year to create the first remote online course for translators to learn subtitling skills based on SubtitleNEXT. The initial training module, along with other brands, went ahead recently run by IT Pros’ most experienced subtitler Monica Paolillo who trained a group of translation professionals to master the software. In addition, the recent launch of a new website www.subtitlenext.com has been labelled as the “Home of Subtitlers” and a NEXTClub members community is growing around the product, with a new e-shop that opened in time for NAB earlier this year. https://shop.profuzdigital.com

PBT EU will also support the Languages & The Media 2018 Conference in Berlin in October with its flagship platform NEXT-TT logo proudly displayed as official Silver Sponsor product of the show, alongside STAR, Netflix and VSI.

PBT EU’s other product on show, the module-based EXEcutor™ Media Integrator introduces three new levels this year at IBC. The system serves as an essential addition to “Channel-In-A-Box” bundles, making it future-ready and adaptable for all production environments. It expands the “CiaB” concept beyond traditional channel origination, over to production and asset control environments, making it more accessible. It is easy to upgrade and is a future-proof solution that evolves and scales with growing requirements without losing data or history and hosts dedicated tools for CRM and project management. (https://pbteu.com/products/executor-media-integrator/)

PBT EU’s GM, Vladimir Stanic will be on hand to share insights and expertise and says, “Our EXEcutor™ brand of products will be enriched by the enhanced EXEcutor™ Media Integrator, plus the premiere of several new server models. Our main emphasis for this IBC combines both trends and all visitors can enjoy the European debut of the NEXT-TT hybrid platform, announced at NAB a few months ago.”
