SubtitleNEXT attracts attention at APTRAD and The Languages & the Media Conference
Studios take a keen interest in SubtitleNEXT’s Live Subtitling capabilities
For immediate release – 13 October 2021, Sofia, Bulgaria – The SubtitleNEXT team is proud to celebrate a successful outcome after attendance as official Exhibitor Partner and premium sponsor of APTRAD and The Languages & the Media 2021 Virtual conferences last month. With media accessibility being more urgent than ever for broadcasters and AVT professionals, the timing of shows like APTRAD and Languages and The Media, have been of paramount importance.
The SubtitleNEXT team introduced the latest developments of both the SubtitleNEXT and NEXT-TT software platforms, which attracted the attention of researchers and experienced professionals in the audiovisual accessibility, transaction, and localisation world at the Languages and the Media (L&M) show in Berlin, which is Europe’s leading localisation event.
New features in SubtitleNEXT and NEXT-TT were showcased and include integration with newsroom editing systems such as AVID, iNews, and Octopus, real-time live subtitling with one or two stages respeaking capability, dictation corrections plus more, all compatible with You Tube, Zoom, Decklink, Newfor and others. The powerful NEXT-TT platform optimises collaborative work and QC, by incorporating many of the remarkable advancements available in SubtitleNEXT.
Highlights and key trends of the L&M show in Berlin covered topics such as machine translation, automatic speech to text and text to speech technologies and how these innovations affect how content owners, media studios, language service providers and freelance subtitlers achieve results as they work on key projects.
CEO of PBT EU Ivanka Vassileva reflected on what she encountered at L&M, “We discovered that there appear to be quite a few Language Service Providers that enter the media localisation market and try to use their computer assisted translation tools for audiovisual translation work. Consequently, this disrupts the traditional subtitling processes, and in turn pressurises the media studios to implement these technologies within their current workflows. Ultimately, this situation then leads to the need for workflow management solutions that are capable of incorporating automatic transcription and translation processing together with the use of other tools. This helps with text correction, but it means that the work of the subtitler in these organisations becomes increasingly more focused on only correcting computer-generated subtitles, instead of actually generating subtitles themselves from a template or from scratch. However, the good news is that all these are functions and capabilities that the media studios require are already available in NEXT -TT and SubtitleNEXT, and it was great that both of our solutions received acknowledgement and interest by them at the show, crediting the software as extremely useful and affordable for companies to invest in, irrespective of their size.”
“Live subtitles for live events and meetings” was another hot topic aired at the L&M show. “Even though many countries already have vast experience in this area, it is still fairly new ground to tread for many new markets presenting challenges that have to be carefully considered such as selecting the best workflows and technologies that include specifics such as language and human resources. Therefore, there is a need for simple, easy to use and highly adaptive solutions for both large broadcasters and small live captioning freelance teams. SubtitleNEXT is clearly a market leader in the live subtitling field as the system offers various workflows and user-friendly tools. Another advantage that SubtitleNEXT offers companies that want live subtitling, is that it provides advanced offline subtitle preparation capabilities in a single application.” Ivanka noted.
As a premium sponsor of APTRAD, the SubtitleNEXT team had a busy turnout to their daily demonstrations of the latest innovations in its subtitling technology, including a new automatic Licensing Manager available in SubtitleNEXT version 5.10. The new License Manager provides organisations with an administrator account to allocate the acquired licenses for the users of choice, under self-management.
Overall, the team’s participation in the technology roundtable proved to be an informative and productive discussion between professionals from different backgrounds. Creator of the SubtitleNEXT software platform, Profuz Digital’s CTO Kamen Ferdinandov was a speaker at the technology roundtable sessions at APTRAD, with his contributions well-respected and highly valued by the subtitling community. He highlighted the important role that audiovisual translation tools play in today’s world and explored informative topics across the AV translation and broadcast sectors ranging from subtitling, dubbing, accessibility modalities, subtitling for hearing-impaired people, and audio description. Kamen said, “We were able to share at the roundtable at APTRAD our current achievements and discuss with other industry professionals about the best way to meet users’ needs, including what’s next in the pipeline.”
The SubtitleNEXT team also invited APTRAD attendees to enter a raffle for a chance to win a laptop and a sought-after SubtitleNEXT Lifetime Expert License. A well-known industry professional in Portugal, Mr Paulo Fernando, was the fortunate winner of the SubtitleNEXT raffle and was impressed with the software which he described as very powerful.
In response to audience requests at these recent events, the team at SubtitleNEXT will be holding a series of technology “SubtitleNEXT Friday Workshops” as of mid-October onwards, to demonstrate how to create subtitles from scratch or from source. The first session will take place on 15th October and will be completely free. Click this link to join in: https://join.skype.com/GJn8QL88GBhT

IABM member PBT EU reveals revenue-boosting solutions at NAB 2019
IABM member PBT EU reveals revenue-boosting solutions at NAB 2019
PBT EU’s vast range of customized Playout solutions with Subtitling platforms opens Localization opportunities for Broadcasters, Content Owners and LSPs
8 – 11 April – NAB 2019, Las Vegas Convention Centre, Las Vegas, Nevada, US
IABM member PBT EU’s Managing Partner and Sales Director, Alexander Stoyanov will be attending NAB again this year in Las Vegas. Apart from meeting with customers and partners at the show, plans to explore current needs, projects implementations, finding strategies to help professionals adapt to the industry’s arising challenges will be on the agenda, as well as keeping abreast of technological trends.
After successive growth, PBT EU continues to provide a wide range of advanced end-to-end turnkey playout solutions including their own EXEcutor™ brand of broadcast servers using PlayBox NEO technologies. Furthermore, PBT EU’s EXEcutor™ Media Integrator module serves as an essential extension expanding the “Channel-In-A-Box” bundle, making it future-ready and highly adaptable for all production environments.
In addition to PBT EU’s renown and proven broadcast solutions, already widely adopted by broadcasters across Europe, the company also offers its popular line of subtitling revenue-boosting timed-text products – SubtitleNEXT™ and NEXT-TT™ that have taken off in leaps and bounds over the past year. Fortunately, expedient systems like PBT EU’s timed-text services incorporate customer-driven development and allow for integration into collaborative systems within broadcast workflows. PBT EU’s platforms support all media from streaming, custom-protected content for multipurpose services, graphics for television, cinema, web, customisable UIs and more.
NEXT-TT launched last NAB and combines captioning/subtitling software SubtitleNEXT with business processing system LAPIS. This unique hybrid design gives users greater freedom of choice on the desktop and in the Cloud. It enables efficient generation, at blistering speed, of timed-text, dubbing and localization services of all content imaginable. It can be used to manage teams of translators, audio-visual professionals, and creative freelancers, and provides a secure workspace with toolsets that deliver reliable high-quality results. (More here https://profuzdigital.com/lapis-features/)
“We want to make broadcasters aware that they could be using subtitles to reach a much wider audience and extend their services to make them more accessible to a larger customer-base. In parallel, they can facilitate content and localization providers in their pursuit of faster and more efficient delivery of material to the distribution networks. Both are consumer driven industries after all.” Alexander notes.
Subtitling is advantageous for broadcasters’ audiences. Timed-text software is a much wider investment and not restricted to subtitling functions alone. Many of the technological innovations in subtitling have come through modules that now support universal subtitle format transcoding and real-time live content. SubtitleNEXT and NEXT-TT provide immense added value to PBT EU’s existing range of broadcast services, for an industry in a rapid state of transition.
“I will be here to represent PBT EU and engage with broadcasters, content owners, post-production and production companies, localization organisations and Language Services Professionals at NAB. I am passionate to discuss how PBT EU’s customised broadcast solutions enhance facilities with viable end-to-end solutions. Subtitling and content accessibility tools, and how NEXT-TT and SubtitleNEXT can help businesses shift a gear, especially with significant product developments introduced this past year, will also be an exciting topic of discussion.” Alexander confirms.
As people and devices continue to become more inter-connected, professionally and socially, subtitles or timed-text services have become a valuable commodity. Following recent government legislation enforcing delivery of subtitling services to linear TV, OTT and online channels, broadcasters are under pressure to migrate to efficient, affordable timed-text systems. Recent research also indicates many people view video without sound, whether on phones, laptops, iPads or other screens, often outnumbering traditional television viewers. This trend calls for further subtitling especially among younger generations where it can serve to pull community groups together.
On the post-production side, most editing software still contains fairly basic subtitling functions and is inefficient for editors to take on subtitling roles alongside editing. Running standalone subtitling platforms, specialized in the full process, produces better time-saving results. Like most aspects of broadcasting, deadlines, multiple versioning and last-minute corrections govern timed-texts, therefore, complex assignments need straightforward, automated, fast handling.
Live events are another niche market where timed-text services are showing potential. Live production will continue growing to a standalone industry due to the particularities and specific challenges it represents – an emerging market that the SubtitleNEXT team have already planned ahead for.
SubtitleNEXT and NEXT-TT have already caught the eye of many European higher education institutions such as colleges, universities and The European School of Translation, incorporating them as part of their curricula. Even the Benelux region’s largest production company Videohouse has adopted SubtitleNEXT. Recently SubtitleNEXT was branded official Silver sponsor product of The Languages and the Media Berlin Conference including the upcoming Media for All International Conference in Stockholm, alongside major industry players such as Netflix, OOONA and Lingsoft. A dedicated member site NEXTClub connecting user groups globally, offers an online gathering space, freely accessible to everyone who registers. Exciting zones to explore in the NEXTClub lounge include NEXTblog, NEXTnews, NEXTtips, NEXTacademy, NEXTcommunity and NEXTmembership which can be accessed at https://subtitlenext.com/club/

Language essentially shapes who we are and in turn shapes the industry. How technology fits into the equation as a disruptor provides challenges as well as opportunities.”
CTO of PBT EU Kamen Ferdinandov, who will also be present at the event, adds further, “In my view, we are at a historic turning point in our civilisation and it is imperative to discuss the implications of how new solutions are making languages more accessible and affecting communications across cultures through media. So, this will be a fascinating topic threading throughout the 3-day period. As a company, we have embraced these changes ahead of time. We are very excited to present the adaptable capabilities that SubtitleNEXT already offers to help solve the challenges facing subtitlers today in a market that demands constant content at a rapid pace.”
